Backflow Prevention in Nashville, TN

Backflow Prevention · Nashville, TN

Keep the water in your pipes flowing one way

Backflow prevention keeps the water in your pipes moving one way, from the street into your home. A backflow preventer is a valve assembly that blocks water from flowing back into the public supply. Stop The Drip is a Nashville plumber that handles backflow preventer installation for homes across Middle Tennessee. We also repair or replace a device that fails its test.

A home needs backflow protection when something on the property can push or pull unsafe water into the line. A lawn irrigation system counts, because its sprinkler heads sit in soil and standing water. Your water utility decides which device fits the hazard. Call or text (615) 723-2488 and tell us what your utility's notice asks for.

What We Handle

  • Backflow preventer installation on lawn irrigation lines
  • Backflow preventers on the main water service, directly behind the meter
  • Reduced pressure assemblies set above ground, clear of flooding
  • Repairs after a failed yearly test from your water utility
  • Fouled check valves cleaned and rebuilt
  • Replacement of devices cracked by a freeze or worn past repair
  • Older devices moved to meet current Metro Water Services standards
  • Expansion tanks for water heaters behind a check valve or backflow preventer

What Does a Backflow Preventer Do?

Backflow is water running the wrong way through the pipes. Metro Water Services notes that a pressure change can reverse the flow and pull in contaminants. A cross-connection is any spot where drinking water can mix with non-drinking water.

Tennessee's cross-connection manual names two causes. Backsiphonage happens when supply pressure drops, as during a main break or firefighting. Backpressure happens when a pump or boiler pushes harder than the supply.

A reduced pressure assembly has two check valves with a relief valve between them. The relief valve dumps any water that leaks past a check valve. The state manual calls for this assembly on lawn irrigation systems.

Backflow Testing Rules in Nashville and Middle Tennessee

State rules require every community water system to run a cross-connection program the state approves. The state manual makes the customer responsible for installing and maintaining any backflow preventer the utility requires. The device gets a test when it goes in and at least once every 12 months after.

In Nashville, a new device must pass an initial inspection. After that, Metro Water Services or its contractor tests it every year and adds the charge to your water bill. If it fails, Metro sets a repair deadline that matches the level of hazard. That deadline ranges from immediate disconnection to 90 days.

Outside Nashville, each water utility runs its own program under the same state rules. Consolidated Utility District of Rutherford County has the customer hire a tester it approves each year. Irrigation devices there get tested in the start-up period, and a failed device has 30 days to pass. Where your utility asks you to set up the test, we can arrange it.

Backflow Preventer Installation and Repair

Metro Water Services wants the device directly behind the meter, so every connection past it is protected. The state manual keeps a reduced pressure assembly out of pits, where floodwater could cover its relief valve. It also calls for freeze protection and room to test and repair.

The manual names debris under a check valve as a common cause of trouble. We clean and rebuild a device when the valve body is sound, and replace one a freeze has cracked. In Nashville, a replacement must meet current Metro Water Services standards, which can mean moving an older device.

Water expands as a water heater warms it. A check valve or backflow preventer on the main water service traps that extra water, so pressure climbs. The Town of Smyrna has check valves at the meter on every home. The state manual recommends an expansion tank, which we fit as part of water heater installation work.

FAQ

Backflow Prevention Questions, Answered

Common questions about backflow prevention around Nashville and the rest of Middle Tennessee. If yours is not here, call or text and ask.

Call (615) 723-2488

Does my house need a backflow preventer?
Metro Water Services says a Nashville home generally needs one when an irrigation or fire system ties in. For a pool or hot tub filled from city water, Metro requires an air gap or a reduced pressure assembly. An air gap means the hose stays secured above the water while it fills. Outside Nashville, your city or utility district sets the rule.
What happens if my backflow preventer fails its test?
Your utility sends a notice with a deadline to repair or replace it. In Nashville, Metro Water Services keeps retesting until the fix is done. We repair or replace the device before the retest.
How much does backflow preventer installation cost?
The price depends on the type and size of the device and where it goes. A new reduced pressure assembly is a different job from a rebuild after a failed test. Moving an older device, or pipe work on the water service line around it, adds to the job. We look at the job and put the quote in writing before any work starts.
Why is my backflow preventer dripping water?
A reduced pressure assembly spills some water under certain normal conditions, the state manual says. A steady flow can mean a check valve is leaking, so have the device checked. Never plug the relief port, since the device depends on that opening.
How do I winterize the backflow preventer on my sprinkler system?
Metro Water Services warns that blowing air through the device can damage it. Its winter guide prefers taking the device off the line, or draining it, before the sprinkler lines get blown out. At the Nashville airport, NOAA's median first fall freeze is November 3. If a freeze cracks the device, we replace it.
Does an outdoor faucet need backflow protection?
A hose that sits in a pool or a bucket can siphon that water back into the house pipes. A hose bib vacuum breaker on the outdoor faucet guards against that. The state manual recommends a self-draining hose bib with a built-in vacuum breaker. We replace old hose bibs as part of outdoor faucet repair.
