Water Line Repair in Nashville, TN

Water Line Repair · Nashville, TN

We fix the line between the meter and your house

Water line repair fixes the pipe that carries water from the meter to your house. When that pipe leaks, you may see a soggy strip of yard or water standing in the meter box. Stop The Drip repairs and replaces main water lines as part of our plumbing service in Nashville and Middle Tennessee.

We also replace pressure regulating valves and run new water service lines from the meter to the house. La Vergne sits at the center of our service area. Every job starts with a look at the line and a quote in writing. Call or text (615) 723-2488 to set up a visit.

Is Your Main Water Line Leaking?

A buried water line can leak for weeks before anyone sees water. The first clue is often the bill, which climbs while your habits stay the same. Consolidated Utility District of Rutherford County also tells customers to check the yard between the meter and the house. Soft or greener patches there can point to the leak.

The water meter can confirm it. La Vergne's water billing department spells out the check. Turn off all water in the house, then open the meter box near the street. If the dial or the small leak indicator still moves, water is running somewhere.

From there we close the main shut-off valve at the house. If the meter keeps moving, the leak is in the buried line. If it stops, the leak is inside the house, and that is a job for leak detection.

Who Owns Your Water Line in Nashville?

Metro Water Services owns the service line from the water main to the meter. The property owner is responsible for the line from the meter to the house. Metro's customer terms also put the PRV and any required backflow preventer on your side of the meter.

Before anyone digs, Tennessee law calls for a Tennessee 811 ticket at least three working days ahead. The utilities then mark their own buried lines. Tennessee 811 lists the water line from the meter to your home as private, so it does not get marked.

Metro Water Services also keeps a public map of service line materials on both sides of the meter. In December of last year, Metro wrote to customers whose line is listed as lead or as galvanized needing replacement. Customers listed with an unknown pipe material got a letter too. If you got one, call or text (615) 723-2488 and we will look at your line.

Water Line Replacement and Pressure Regulating Valves

One leak on a sound line is usually a repair. We dig down to the break and replace the damaged section. When a line keeps leaking, we replace it from the meter to the house.

Old pipe is the other reason to replace a line. Metro Water Services says lead was common in service lines before the mid 1950s. Its standard in 1970 was copper. Galvanized steel can rust on the inside and narrow the pipe, which lowers the pressure.

A pressure regulating valve, or PRV, lowers street pressure before it reaches your fixtures. The 2024 plumbing code Metro Nashville adopted calls for one when static pressure inside a home tops 80 psi. Metro Water Services also encourages customers to have a PRV installed and checked regularly. When the old valve wears out, we replace it and read the pressure again.

FAQ

Water Line Repair Questions, Answered

Common questions about water line repair around Nashville and the rest of Middle Tennessee. If yours is not here, call or text and ask.

Call (615) 723-2488

Is a leak at the meter box mine or the water company's?
It depends on which side of the meter it is on. A leak on the street side is usually the water provider's, so report it to them. A leak past the meter, toward the house, is usually the owner's to fix. La Vergne's water billing department says a leak on your property is yours to repair.
What does water line repair cost?
Two things drive most of the price: how far the line runs and what sits on top of it. A driveway over the line adds work, and so does rock. Federal soil records show the most common soil in this area sits on limestone 20 to 40 inches down. We look at the job and put the quote in writing before any digging starts.
How do I know if my PRV is failing?
A worn PRV can let full street pressure into the house. Pipes that bang when a faucet shuts off are one sign, and a toilet that keeps refilling is another. We put a gauge on an outside faucet to read the pressure. A reading over 80 psi means the valve is not doing its job.
Can you fix a pipe that burst in a freeze?
Yes. First, shut off the main valve at the house so the water stops. We cut out the split section and put in new pipe, then check the rest of that run. A split outside faucet calls for hose bib replacement, and we handle that too.
Why is my water pressure low?
Sometimes the cause is the water system itself. Metro Water Services says summer sprinklers pull pressure down on early mornings, and homes on higher ground feel it most. Low pressure at every tap, all day long, points to the house side. In Williamson County, Milcrofton Utility District says a home's PRV is often the cause.
Do you install new water lines and taps?
Yes. We run new water service lines to the house and handle water taps. The water provider sets the rules for the tap and the meter, and we work to them. In Metro Nashville, every new water meter has to be permitted and inspected.
