Your sewer line carries every drain in the house out to the public sewer main. When that pipe cracks or fills with roots, wastewater backs up into the house. Stop The Drip handles sewer line repair for homes across Nashville and Middle Tennessee. We dig to the broken section and repair it, or replace the line when the whole run is worn out.
A clog in one sink or toilet usually clears with a drain cleaning visit. When every drain backs up at once, the trouble is likely in the sewer line itself. We look at the line before anyone digs, then put the quote in writing.

A broken sewer line often starts out as slow drains all over the house. A toilet gurgles when the washer empties. Then sewage comes up at the lowest drain first, often a basement floor drain or a downstairs shower.
Outside, look for a soggy or sunken strip of yard over the pipe, often with a sewer smell. A wet spot with no smell may be a leak in the main water line instead. Indoors, a main line that needs clearing every few months is another sign. Cleaning opens the pipe, but the break behind the clog is still there.
Tree roots are behind many sewer clogs. Metro Water Services' sewer brochure says roots send feelers through tiny cracks or loose joints, then feed inside the pipe. It advises keeping trees and shrubs at least 10 feet from a sewer line. Trees with spreading, thirsty roots belong at least 20 to 30 feet away.
One cracked joint or a crushed section can take a spot repair. We dig down to the break and cut out the bad pipe. New pipe is coupled in where the old section came out. A line with breaks along its length, or roots at joint after joint, calls for sewer line replacement.
A sewer line runs on gravity, so the pipe needs steady fall toward the main. Metro Codes' homeowner guide to sewer work prefers a quarter inch of fall per foot of pipe. A belly is a low spot where the line lost that fall, and waste settles there. The fix is to dig up that stretch and set the pipe back on an even slope.
Rock can change a sewer dig in Middle Tennessee. The most common soil in the area's federal soil surveys sits on limestone 20 to 40 inches down. In parts of the Murfreesboro area, limestone lies just 3 to 12 inches deep. Metro Codes' sewer guide in Nashville keeps pipe off solid rock with a bed of crushed rock.
In Nashville, you own the sewer service line from the house all the way to the public main. Metro Water Services' sewer brochure says there is no city part of that line. That holds even where the pipe runs under the sidewalk or the street.
When a private line fails inside the public right-of-way or sewer easement, Metro Water Services can help with that part. First a plumber has to try to fix it. After an 811 call, a 2-foot section of the line is dug up and cut out in the easement. The homeowner also signs a release agreement.
We do that dig, along with any repair on the private part of the line. We also make new sewer taps, where a service line joins the public main. Outside Davidson County, the city or utility district that runs your sewer sets its own rules for repairs and taps. Spring Hill, for one, has its own sewer and water tap application.
