Water Heater Repair in Nashville, TN

Water Heater Repair · Nashville, TN

When the hot water runs cold or the tank leaks

Water heater repair starts with what the heater is doing. Maybe the water never gets hot, or it turns cold halfway through a shower. Maybe there is a puddle under the tank or a pilot that keeps going out. Stop The Drip repairs gas and electric tank water heaters in homes across Nashville and Middle Tennessee.

We find the cause first, then explain what failed and how we fix it. You get the quote in writing before any work starts. This page covers tank heaters, and tankless water heater repair has a page of its own. Call or text (615) 723-2488 and tell us what your heater is doing.

What We Handle

  • No hot water from gas and electric tank water heaters
  • Hot water that runs out fast or never gets hot enough
  • Pilot lights that go out and igniters that will not light
  • Heating element and thermostat replacement on electric tanks
  • Dripping or leaking temperature and pressure relief valves
  • Expansion tank checks and replacement
  • Sediment flushing for tanks that rumble or heat slowly
  • Leaks at the drain valve and the water connections

No hot water? What a water heater plumber checks first

On a gas water heater, no hot water usually means the burner is not lighting. We check the pilot and the igniter first, then the thermocouple and the gas control. If the trouble is in the gas line to the heater, the fix becomes gas line repair.

Most electric water heaters have two heating elements, each with its own thermostat. When the upper element or thermostat fails, the water usually never gets hot. When the lower one fails, you get a little hot water that runs out fast. We start at the breaker and the reset button, then test each part.

Hot water that runs short can also come from sediment or a thermostat set too low. Winter makes it worse, because colder water comes into the tank in January, Nashville's coldest month. A tank too small for the household is a replacement question, and we lay out the options.

Why is my water heater leaking?

Where the water comes from decides the fix. A drip at the drain valve or at a fitting on top is usually a repair. If every valve and fitting is dry but water pools under the heater, the tank has likely rusted through. A tank that leaks through its own wall cannot be repaired.

The temperature and pressure relief valve opens when the tank gets too hot or the pressure climbs too high. A drip from its pipe often means heated water has no room to expand. A backflow preventer or a check valve on the main line can trap that pressure. We add an expansion tank to give the water room, or replace one that has failed.

Never cap or plug the relief valve pipe to stop a drip. The valve needs that open path to let pressure out. Some leaks start at a pipe above the heater and only look like a tank leak. Then the job moves to leak detection and repair.

Water heater service for Nashville's moderately hard water

Metro Water Services calls Nashville's water moderately hard. Its yearly report puts total hardness near 100 milligrams per liter, about 6 grains per gallon. The hardness is calcium dissolved from limestone, and treatment does not take it out.

The U.S. Geological Survey notes that heated hard water can leave solid deposits in a water heater. Those deposits settle on the bottom of the tank as sediment. On a gas heater, the layer slows heating and can cause popping or rumbling sounds. On an electric heater, it can bury the lower element and wear it out early.

A flush drains that sediment out through the valve at the bottom of the tank. A water heater maker's care guide calls for a drain and flush at least once a year. We flush tanks as part of water heater service.

FAQ

Water Heater Repair Questions, Answered

Common questions about water heater repair around Nashville and the rest of Middle Tennessee. If yours is not here, call or text and ask.

Call (615) 723-2488

How much does water heater repair cost?
The price depends on which part failed and whether the heater runs on gas or electric. Where the heater sits matters too, because a tight closet or an attic takes more time. We find the cause, then put the quote in writing before we start. Call or text (615) 723-2488 to set up a visit.
Should I repair my water heater or replace it?
Most failed parts can be swapped, such as an element, a thermostat, a thermocouple or a relief valve. A rusted-through tank needs a new heater, and an older heater with a big repair may too. Metro Codes advises replacing any water heater that sat in flood water. When a new unit makes more sense, our water heater replacement page covers that work.
Why does my water heater pilot light keep going out?
A worn thermocouple is a common cause. It is the sensor that keeps the gas valve open while the pilot burns. A dirty pilot or a draft down the vent can also put the flame out. We test each part to find the one that failed.
What temperature should my water heater be set at?
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission urges setting water heaters at 120 degrees Fahrenheit to help prevent scalds. Young children and older adults face the most risk from hot tap water. Most electric heaters have two thermostats, and both should be set to the same temperature. If 120 degrees leaves you short on hot water, the heater may need a repair.
How do I know if my water heater is going out?
Common signs are rumbling, rusty hot water, water around the base and hot water that runs out early. Some of these point to one part, like an element or a valve. Age matters too, and a U.S. Department of Energy guide says tank heaters generally last 10 to 15 years. We check the heater and tell you whether it needs a part or a replacement.
Do you offer water heater repair in my town?
La Vergne sits at the center of our service area, which runs about 30 miles around it. That takes in Nashville, Murfreesboro, Smyrna, Franklin, Brentwood, Hendersonville and the towns between. The service areas page lists the towns we cover.
