Sump pumps for Middle Tennessee crawl spaces and basements

Stop The Drip handles sump pump installation and sump pump repair for homes across Nashville and Middle Tennessee. A sump pump moves water that collects in a crawl space or under a basement floor. We install new pumps, and we replace the ones that have quit.

Some crawl space water comes from a leaking supply line or drain instead of the ground. That calls for finding the plumbing leak before any pump goes in. As a plumber serving Nashville and the towns around it, we look at where the water starts. Then you get the quote in writing.

What We Handle

  • New sump pump installation in crawl spaces and basements
  • Sump pump replacement when the old pump has failed or worn out
  • Sump pump repair for a stuck float or a pump that will not shut off
  • Check valves that stop pumped water from falling back into the pit
  • Discharge lines that carry the water outside, away from the foundation
  • Battery backup sump pumps that run while the power is out
  • A written quote before any work starts

How Sump Pump Installation Works in a Crawl Space or Basement

A sump system has a few working parts. A pit, called the sump, collects water at the low point. A float rides up with the water and turns the pump on. The pump pushes the water up a discharge line and out of the house.

On a new installation, the pump goes into the pit with a check valve on the line above it. The check valve stops the water in the line from falling back into the pit when the pump shuts off. The discharge line carries the water outside and away from the foundation.

Before we finish, we pour water into the pit and watch the pump run a full cycle. It should start as the float lifts and stop once the water level drops.

When Does a Sump Pump Need Repair or Replacement?

A home inspectors' trade group names a jammed float as one of the most common reasons sump pumps fail. The float gets caught between the pump and the side of a cramped pit. A float stuck low leaves the pump off while the water keeps rising.

The check valve and the discharge line can fail too, and we repair both. When the pump itself is worn out, sump pump replacement can make more sense than a repair. We look at the pump and the pit, then tell you which way we would go.

A sump pump moves groundwater and runoff that collect in the pit. Sewage rising from a basement floor drain is a sewer backup, a drain or sewer line problem. We sort out which one you have when we look at the job.

Battery Backup Sump Pumps for Middle Tennessee Homes

NOAA's climate averages for 1991 to 2020 at the Nashville airport show about 50 inches of rain a year. March through May are the three wettest months in those averages. They also show about 14 days a year with an inch of rain or more. A sump pump does its heaviest work in wet stretches like these.

A standard sump pump runs on house power. If a storm knocks out the power, the pump stops with it. A battery backup pump is a second pump that runs on a battery when the power is out. Federal flood guidance on Ready.gov says to consider a sump pump with a battery.

We install battery backup pumps with new sump pumps and add them to working systems. La Vergne sits at the center of our service area, which reaches about 30 miles out.

FAQ

Sump Pumps Questions, Answered

Common questions about sump pumps around Nashville and the rest of Middle Tennessee. If yours is not here, call or text and ask.

Call (615) 723-2488

How can I tell if my sump pump is working?
Pour a bucket of water into the pit. The float should lift and start the pump, and the pump should empty the pit and shut off. Home inspection guidance calls for sump pump upkeep once a year. If the pump stays quiet, call or text (615) 723-2488.
Why does my sump pump keep turning on and off?
In a wet stretch, a pump can cycle often because the soil around the house stays soaked. When it cycles in dry weather, the check valve is one place to look. A failed valve lets the water in the line fall back into the pit, so the pump moves it again.
How long does a sump pump last?
A home inspectors' association lists about 7 years as a typical life for a sump pump with normal upkeep. Treat that as a guideline. A pump that runs often in a wet crawl space can wear out sooner. If yours is near that age and acting up, replacement is worth weighing.
Does a crawl space need a sump pump?
If water stands in it after heavy rain, a sump pump at the low point can move that water outside. A crawl space that stays dry may not need one. Local rules can matter too, and the building code in Nolensville says a positive drain is required for crawl spaces. We install sump pumps in crawl spaces as well as basements.
Can my sump pump drain into the sewer in Nashville?
Generally no. Metro Nashville's sewer code bars groundwater and basement drainage from the public sewer, with narrow exceptions. Other towns and utilities set their own rules, and the local utility can tell you what applies. We set the discharge line to send the water outside, away from the house.
How much does sump pump installation cost?
The price depends on the job. Swapping a pump in a working pit costs less than a new installation, and a battery backup adds to it. The length of the discharge line and how easy the crawl space or basement is to reach matter too. We look at the job and put the quote in writing, so call or text (615) 723-2488.
