Stop The Drip handles garbage disposal repair for homes across Nashville and Middle Tennessee. The trouble often starts with a sound. The unit hums when you flip the switch, or it goes silent. Sometimes water shows up in the cabinet under the sink instead.
We find the cause, then tell you whether a repair or a new disposal makes more sense. If the sink also backs up, we clear the pipe past the disposal with kitchen drain cleaning. Disposal work is one part of our service as a Nashville plumber. Call or text (615) 723-2488.
Tell us about the clog, leak, water heater or fixture and where it is. We look at the job and put the quote in writing.
A hum means the motor has power but cannot turn. Something is wedged against the spinning plate inside, like a bottle cap or a spoon. A jam can also overheat the motor. Then the reset button trips, and the disposal goes quiet.
We shut off the power and work the plate loose with an unjamming wrench. Whatever caused the jam comes out with pliers, never by hand. Then we reset the unit and run water through it. If it still hums with nothing in the way, the problem is inside the unit.
No sound at all points to the reset or the power. We check both before anything else. If they are fine, the fault sits in the wiring or in the unit. A bad switch or circuit is work for an electrician.
Where the water shows up tells you a lot. A drip at the top usually comes from the seal where the unit mounts to the sink. A drip at the side points to the drain elbow or the dishwasher hose. Those are repairs, and we tighten or replace the part that failed.
Water at the bottom takes a closer look, since a drip from above can run down to it. A worn gasket at the drain elbow can do the same. When the leak comes through the body itself, a new disposal is usually the fix. The same goes for a unit that hums with no jam, or stays dead with good power.
Sometimes the disposal is dry, and the drip comes from the faucet or a supply line. We find and fix those too, as part of plumbing leak repair. Either way, we show you what we found and put the quote in writing.
A new disposal should fit the sink and the way you cook. A bigger motor grinds more and suits a busy kitchen. Some models add sound insulation for a quieter grind. A thick sink may need a longer mounting flange, and we check that first.
Most disposals run off a switch. A batch feed model runs only when its stopper sits in the drain, which suits a sink with no switch. We mount the unit and hook up the drain and any dishwasher hose. Then we fill the sink and run the disposal while we check each joint for drips.
In Nashville, Metro Water Services puts grease and cooking oil on its list of things to toss in the trash. A disposal sends everything it grinds down the same drain, so keep grease out of it too. Run a strong flow of water while the unit grinds. Grease already built up in the line may call for hydro jetting.
