Gas Line Installation and Repair in Nashville, TN

Gas Lines · Nashville, TN

New gas lines and leak repair past the meter

Gas line installation brings gas to a new range, a dryer, a water heater or an outdoor grill. As a plumber serving Nashville and Middle Tennessee, Stop The Drip runs gas piping in homes and yards. We size each line for the gas it must carry, then pressure test it before hookup.

Gas line repair covers the piping you already have. A fitting can seep, or an old buried yard line can rust through. We track down the leak and repair it, and then the line gets a fresh pressure test. Your gas company owns the meter, and our work starts on the house side of it.

What We Handle

  • New gas lines for ranges and gas dryers
  • Gas piping for tank and tankless water heaters
  • Gas lines run outside to grills and fire pits
  • Gas lines for standby generators
  • Line sizing for the appliances on the line and the length of the run
  • Gas line repair on house piping and buried yard lines
  • Gas leak detection and repair on the house side of the meter
  • Pressure tests on new and repaired piping

New gas lines for appliances inside and out

We start with how much gas the appliance burns and what else shares the line. The pipe size comes from that total and the distance from the meter. A line that is too small can starve an appliance when everything runs at once.

Inside, the pipe often runs through a crawl space or an attic. Outside, a line to a grill or a fire pit goes in a trench across the yard. Before any digging, Tennessee law calls for a locate ticket through Tennessee 811 at least three working days ahead.

Once the pipe is in place, we cap it and pressure test it before any gas flows. In Brentwood, the residential rough-in checklist has the gauge hold 15 psi for 15 minutes. A water heater move takes its gas line along, and our water heater installation page covers that job.

Gas leak repair: what to do first if you smell gas

Gas companies add an odorant to natural gas, so a leak smells like rotten eggs. You may also hear a hiss near a gas line or the meter. Either sign is a reason to leave the area right away.

If you smell gas inside, get everyone out first. Do not flip a switch or use a phone until you are outside. From there, call 911 and then your gas company. Stay out until they say the area is safe.

Once the area is safe, gas leak detection on the house side of the meter is our work. We put a gauge on the house piping and see whether it holds pressure. If it drops, we narrow the leak down one section at a time and repair or replace the bad part. A drip under a sink is a water leak, and our water leak detection page covers that work.

Gas line repair: which lines are yours in Middle Tennessee?

Your gas company usually owns the service line from the street and the meter at your house. Under federal pipeline rules, that service line ends where the meter connects to your piping. The piping after it is yours, and so are buried lines out to a grill or a fire pit. Old flexible connectors behind ranges and dryers are yours too, and gas company safety guidance says to have them checked.

That split matters when anyone digs. Tennessee 811 says gas lines are typically marked only up to the meter. A buried line past it has to be found another way, often by a private locating service.

Under federal rules, a gas company that does not maintain this buried piping must tell its customers in writing. The notice warns that unmaintained piping can corrode and leak, and should be checked for leaks now and then. It names plumbing contractors as one source of help, and that is our gas line repair work.

FAQ

Gas Lines Questions, Answered

Common questions about gas lines around Nashville and the rest of Middle Tennessee. If yours is not here, call or text and ask.

Call (615) 723-2488

How much does it cost to run a new gas line?
The price depends on how far the line runs and how much gas the appliance burns. A short run through an open crawl space is simpler than a trench across the yard. A bigger load can call for bigger pipe, and some jobs need a permit and an inspection. We look at the job and put the quote in writing.
Can you run a gas line for a new range or a gas dryer?
Yes. We tie into your existing gas piping and run a line sized for the new appliance. The new line gets a pressure test before the appliance is connected. If the old piping is too small, we tell you up front.
Do I need a bigger gas line for a tankless water heater or a generator?
Often, yes. Both can need more gas than the old line was sized to carry. We check the load and the pipe sizes before we quote the job. Our tankless water heater installation page covers the rest of a tank-to-tankless switch.
Do I call the gas company or a gas plumber?
If you smell gas, the first calls go to 911 and the gas company, from outside. The meter and the line from the street are theirs as well. A gas plumber handles the piping after the meter, inside the house and out in the yard. If the gas company shut the gas off at the meter, turning it back on is their call.
Do I need a permit for a new gas line?
Rules differ from town to town. In Nashville, Metro Codes issues gas and mechanical permits, and that work gets its own inspection. Lebanon's code skips the permit for a leak repair on house piping, but Mount Juliet's rule covers gas repairs too. The codes office for your address answers what your job needs, and we point you there.
How can I tell if a buried gas line in the yard is leaking?
Dead plants or bubbling water along the line can point to a leak, and so can a hiss. Soil can fade the rotten egg smell from a buried leak, so the smell alone may not tell you. If you notice these signs, leave the area and call 911 and the gas company. Once they make it safe, we test the line and repair or replace the leaking section.
