Water Leak Detection and Repair in Nashville, TN

Leak Detection · Nashville, TN

Hidden leaks traced to the line that failed

A water bill that jumps with no change in use often points to a hidden leak. Water leak detection is the work of tracing where that water goes. Stop The Drip handles leak detection and leak repair in homes across Nashville, La Vergne and Middle Tennessee. Leak repair is part of the in-home service work we do as a plumber in Nashville.

For a hidden leak, the visit starts at the water meter with every fixture turned off. Then we pressure test the lines and close valves to check one part of the house at a time. When the tests point to the leak, we show you what we found and put the repair price in writing. Call or text (615) 723-2488.

What We Handle

  • High water bill checks that start at the water meter
  • Pressure testing of the supply lines with the main valve shut
  • Hot side and cold side checks to show which line is losing water
  • Leak repair at supply lines, shutoff valves, fittings and drain joints
  • Leaks behind walls, above ceilings, under sinks and in crawl spaces
  • Leaks at water heater fittings and valves
  • Slab leak testing, then repair of the line once the leak is found
  • Leaks left behind by earlier repairs that did not hold

How do you find a hidden water leak?

With every tap and appliance off, a water meter should sit still, so we check it first. The Consolidated Utility District of Rutherford County gives customers the same test. Write down the reading, then read it again after two hours with no water use. If the reading changed, it says, you have a leak.

Next, we shut the main valve and pressure test the lines. If the pressure falls, water is escaping at a fixture or through a pipe. Closing the cold supply valve at the water heater splits the hot side from the cold side. That tells us which side to follow.

Drain leaks only show up when water runs. So we run one fixture at a time and watch the cabinet or ceiling below it. A stain that grows during one shower points to that shower's drain or valve.

Where leaks hide in Middle Tennessee homes

The EPA counts worn toilet flappers and dripping faucets among the common leaks in a home. It says the average household's leaks can waste more than 9,300 gallons a year. A worn flapper can leak thousands of gallons a year without a sound, the EPA says. That one is a job for running toilet repair.

Supply lines and shutoff valves under sinks can drip onto the cabinet floor. A leak at the water heater's fittings or valves is a job for water heater repair. A crawl space leak can go unseen until the floor feels soft or the house smells musty. Much of the ground here is slow-draining clay, so that water tends to sit.

Hard freezes and high water pressure both strain pipes. In the December 2022 cold snap, Nashville's highs stayed below freezing three days in a row. Metro Water Services encourages Nashville customers to have a pressure reducing valve on their side of the line, checked regularly. We check the house pressure on a leak call too.

Slab leak repair and plumbing leak repair

Most leak repair comes down to replacing the part that failed. That can be a supply line, a shutoff valve, a fitting or a section of pipe. When the leak sits behind drywall, we open the wall where the tests point and repair the pipe. We also fix leaks left behind by earlier work that did not hold.

A slab leak is a leak in a water line under a concrete floor. A warm spot on the floor or the sound of water with every tap off can point to one. If every fixture checks out, our meter and pressure tests can tell us the leak is likely under the slab.

If the tests cannot narrow the spot enough to open the floor, we tell you before any concrete comes up. Once the leak is found, we repair the line and test the system again. You get the options and the price in writing before we begin.

FAQ

Leak Detection Questions, Answered

Common questions about leak detection around Nashville and the rest of Middle Tennessee. If yours is not here, call or text and ask.

Call (615) 723-2488

How much does leak detection and repair cost?
The price depends on where the leak is and what it takes to reach it. A dripping supply line under a sink is a small job, while a leak under a slab takes more. We look at the job and put the quote in writing before any work starts. Call or text (615) 723-2488.
Why is my water bill suddenly so high?
A leak you cannot see is one common cause. The EPA suggests checking your use in a cold month like January or February. A family of four using more than 12,000 gallons that month could have serious leaks, it says. A high bill check with us starts at the meter and works through the house.
Does a slab leak repair mean breaking up the floor?
Not always. One repair opens the concrete at the leak and fixes the pipe there. Another leaves the old line under the slab and runs a new line through the walls or attic. We explain which fits your home and put the quote in writing.
What should I do first when I find a leak?
Shut off the water at the main valve, usually where the water line enters the house. In Rutherford County, the Consolidated Utility District says the shutoff on its meters may look like a stove knob. Then call or text (615) 723-2488. If water has soaked the floor or drywall, a water damage restoration company handles the dry-out.
What if the leak is in the yard?
A soft or extra green patch between the meter and the house can mean a water service line leak. In Nashville, Metro Water Services says the customer owns the line from the meter box to the house. Leaks in the street or the meter box are reported to Metro Water Services. Repairs on your side fall under main water line repair.
Do you check for gas leaks too?
Yes. Gas leak detection is part of our gas line repair work. If you smell gas inside, Tennessee's utility commission says to leave the house. Then call the gas utility once you are well away from the building.
