Water Heater Installation and Replacement in Nashville, TN

Gas and electric tank water heaters, replaced and installed

Water heater replacement often starts with a cold shower or a puddle under the tank. Stop The Drip handles water heater installation and replacement for homes across Nashville and Middle Tennessee. We put in gas and electric tank water heaters, sized to how your house uses hot water. If one part failed on a sound tank, water heater repair may be the better fix.

Our focus is in-home service and repair work for homeowners. La Vergne sits at the center of our service area, from Murfreesboro to Hendersonville. For hot water on demand, we also handle tankless water heater installation. Call or text (615) 723-2488, and we put the quote in writing before work starts.

What We Handle

  • Replacement of leaking or failed tank water heaters
  • New gas and electric tank water heaters, sized to the household
  • Upsizing when the old tank keeps running out of hot water
  • Relocating a water heater to a new spot in the house
  • Expansion tanks on homes with a check valve or a pressure regulating valve
  • Gas connections and vents on gas water heaters
  • Relief valve discharge pipes and drain pans where the code calls for them
  • A shutoff valve on the cold water line at the heater

What Does a Water Heater Replacement Include?

Each job starts with a look at the old unit and the space around it. A new tank can be taller or wider than the old one, so we measure first. Then we turn off the water and the gas or power, and drain the old tank.

The new tank gets a shutoff valve on its cold water line. Its relief valve gets a discharge pipe that ends at a safe spot, like a floor drain or outdoors. Where a leak would damage the house, the code calls for a drain pan under the tank. On a closed water system, an expansion tank usually goes on too.

A gas tank gets a gas connection and a vent that carries exhaust outdoors. Some gas tanks use a fan to push exhaust out through plastic pipe. In Davidson County, Metro Codes requires plastic vent pipe on a gas appliance to be listed to UL 1738. We fill the tank before the burner or the elements come on, then check every joint for leaks.

Sizing a New Water Heater for Your Household

Tank size is only part of it. The yellow EnergyGuide label on a tank water heater also lists its first hour rating. That rating estimates the gallons of hot water a fully heated tank can supply in one hour.

We match that rating to your busiest hour of hot water use. Think of back-to-back showers while the dishwasher runs. If your house runs out of hot water now, upsizing to a higher rating may be the answer.

A bigger gas tank may have a bigger burner. We check that the gas line and the vent can handle it. Going from electric to gas takes a new gas line to the heater and a vent. Going from gas to electric takes a circuit sized for the heater, which an electrician runs.

Relocating a Water Heater in Nashville and Middle Tennessee Homes

Sometimes the old spot is the problem. A tank in an attic or a hall closet can soak finished rooms when it fails. Relocating a water heater to a garage or a utility room puts a future leak where it does less harm.

A move takes more than carrying the tank. New water lines run to the new spot, plus a path for the relief valve pipe and pan drain. A gas tank also needs gas and a vent there, and an electric tank needs its circuit.

Garages bring one more rule. Nashville's residential code wants a gas water heater's ignition source at least 18 inches above a garage floor. Units listed as flammable vapor ignition resistant are the exception.

Common questions about water heater installation around Nashville and the rest of Middle Tennessee. If yours is not here, call or text and ask.

How much does it cost to replace a water heater?
The price depends on the fuel and size of the tank, and on where it sits. Venting work, an expansion tank, a pan or a move adds to it. We look at the job and put the quote in writing before work starts. For market ranges, read what a water heater replacement costs in Tennessee.
How long does a water heater replacement take?
A like-for-like swap in an open garage or utility room is usually done in one visit. An attic or a tight closet takes longer, and so does a move or a fuel change. The written quote lays out what the job involves before we start.
Should I repair or replace my water heater?
A tank that leaks from its body has usually rusted through, and no part fixes that. A federal energy guide puts a tank's life at 10 to 15 years, so age matters too. Metro Codes advises replacing a gas or electric water heater that has had water damage, such as from a flood. When the tank is sound and one part failed, a repair usually makes more sense.
Do I need an expansion tank with a new water heater?
Water expands as it heats, and a check valve, a backflow preventer or a pressure regulating valve can trap it. That makes a closed system, and pressure climbs each time the tank heats. The plumbing code calls for a way to control that pressure, usually an expansion tank. It also says the relief valve is not the way to handle it.
Does a water heater replacement need a permit in Nashville?
Metro Codes says replacing a 50-gallon home water heater generally does not need a permit. Changing the fuel type, such as gas to electric, does. Other towns set their own rules: Gallatin and Hendersonville both list water heaters as permit items. Your city or county codes office answers for your address, and we point you to it.
Can a water heater go in the attic or a closet?
Yes, when the space allows it. An attic install needs a clear, floored path big enough to carry the tank in and out. A gas unit in a closet needs enough air to burn and room to service it. In an attic, the code's drain pan rule applies, since a leak would reach the ceiling below.
