A tank that refills when nobody flushed and water that pools around the base are both jobs for toilet repair. Often one worn part is to blame, such as the flapper or the wax ring. Stop The Drip repairs and replaces toilets in homes across Nashville, La Vergne and Middle Tennessee.
When a toilet is past saving, toilet replacement makes more sense. We also handle new toilet installation, including water-saving and comfort-height toilets. Toilets are part of the home service work we do as a plumber in Nashville. Call or text (615) 723-2488 to set up a visit.
Tell us about the clog, leak, water heater or fixture and where it is. We look at the job and put the quote in writing.
A running toilet usually has a flapper that no longer seals or a fill valve that will not shut off. The EPA traces most toilet leaks to old or worn-out flappers. A worn one can make the toilet flush by itself or leak thousands of gallons a year without a sound.
The EPA suggests a dye test for a quiet leak. Put a few drops of food coloring in the tank and leave it alone for 10 minutes. If color shows up in the bowl, the tank is leaking into it. Flush when you are done so the dye does not stain the tank.
We replace the worn flapper or fill valve and set the water level so the valve shuts off. The EPA says to check a flapper now and then and replace it at least every five years. If Metro Water Services is your utility, your water and sewer charges both come from the meter reading. Every gallon a running toilet wastes passes through that meter.
A puddle that keeps coming back around the base usually points to the wax ring. The ring seals the toilet's outlet to the flange, the fitting on top of the drain pipe. When a toilet rocks, the wax gets pushed out of shape and the seal opens. A drip from the tank bolts or the water hookup can look the same, so we check those too.
We pull the toilet and look at the flange and the floor under it. Older homes often have a cast iron flange, and newer homes usually have a plastic one. A cracked or rusted flange gets repaired or replaced before the toilet is reset. Then we set the toilet on a new wax ring and new bolts and test it.
A slow leak at the base can soften the subfloor over time. We check for soft spots while the toilet is off and tell you what we find. If the floor stays wet after we reset the toilet, a pipe in the wall or floor may be leaking. Finding that leak is a job for leak detection.
The EPA counts toilets as the biggest indoor water user in an average home, at nearly 30 percent. An older toilet can use as much as 6 gallons in one flush. The federal standard is 1.6 gallons per flush, and newer designs can use 1.28 gallons or less.
A new toilet installation starts with a tape measure. The rough-in is the distance from the wall to the drain's center, and the toilet must fit it. With the old toilet out, we check the flange and set the new one level on a fresh wax ring. We hook up the water and flush it several times while we watch the floor.
A comfort-height toilet sits taller than an older standard bowl, closer to chair height. The ADA standards set the seat of an accessible toilet at 17 to 19 inches above the floor. A taller seat can be easier to sit down on and stand up from.
